Dr. Eric LAURENT, B.S., M.S., Ph.D. Maître de Conférences (Assistant Professor) in Cognitive Psychology, Head of the Undergraduate Psychology Studies, University of Franche-Comté (Dept. of Psychology) I funded this research team in order to develop a theoretical framework that I began to establish between 1999 and 2003 during my Ph.D. ( An Ecological Approach to Cognitive Expertise ). Today, b oth the theoretical and experimental frameworks that are proposed go beyond strictly cognitive and behavioral research. In addition, we develop projects in domains such as physiological-cognitive, emotional-cognitive, concept-percept, motivational-perceptual, couplings, and within-individual variability during neuropsychological testing (in order to invetigate the dynamics of psychological and neuronal couplings that are associated to the progress of neurodegenerative illness). I have called the epistemological perspective that I propose the ENACtive Multiscale Coupling Approach , which is a generalization and a multiscale point of view of enaction, a theoretical trend originally proposed by Francisco J. Varela in the 80's and 90's. Research Assistant (staff)
Mr. Nicolas NOIRET, is in charge of lab facilities (computers, Eyetracking systems) and provide team member with training in eye movement recording, experiment programing, data analysis. He contributes to monitor the advancement of different research projects carried out by master students. He is involved in several projects concerning eye movements, especially in their relationship to mood, depression and Alzheimer disease. Ph.D. students (current)
Mr. Gilles CHOPARD, B.A. and M.A. in Psychology, M.S. in Neuroscience , Ph.D. candidate in Neuroscience , University of Franche-Comté (and neuropsychologist at the Memory Center for Resources and Research, Besançon University Hospital) My clinical work and research are centred on the screening and early diagnosis of cognitive decline related to neurodegenerative processes such as Alzheimer’s disease. The objectives of my research project are: (1) to examine the relationship between short practice effects (or Learning Potential) and longitudinal intraindividual cognitive change in subjects with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI); (2) to investigate the microstrutural changes of white matter regions in MCI so as to better understand the link between structural connectivity and Learning Potential. My research also aims at improving our knowledge about the dynamics of cognition . We will try to understand the dynamics of physiological and psychological couplings. My research should inform and be informed by the ENACTive Multiscale Couplings Approach developed in our lab.
Mr. Renzo BIANCHI, B.A. in Psychology, M.A. in Cognitive Psychology and Neuropsychology, Ph.D. candidate in Cognitive and Health Psychology) , University of Franche-Comté I am currently working on stress-related disorders – burnout, anxiety, and depression – in an approach focusing on: 1) the biological cost (morbidity and mortality) of psychosocial adaptation; 2) the embodiment of domination. The notion of effectiveness-of-action is the keystone of my theoretical frame, in an attempt to provide a more unified and integrated view of stress-related disorders. As a Ph.D. candidate, I notably examine the value-added of burnout concept, and try to determine whether work-related chronic stress might not be heuristically conceived as an anxious and/or depressive disorder. To this end, I investigate cognitive, behavioral, and psychophysiological correlates of burnout within experimental paradigms, and search for potential neurobiological markers. Visiting International Ph.D. students (current: March-June 2011) Mr. Arvydas KUZINAS , B.A. in Psychology, Vilnius University, M.A. in Developmental Psychology and M.A. in Business Psychology, Mykolas Romeris University, Ph.D. student and Lecturer in Psychology, Mykolas Romeris University, Vilnius, Lithuania I am interested in emotional reactions evoked by visual stimuli. During my studies I try to investigate the effects of specific elements (colour, size, shape, etc.) and their interactions: with other elements and with image content. Emotional effects and visual information are also thoroughly studied in the Lab. That is why we plan to cooperate in studying the relation between emotion and perception. Emphasis on physiological measures and cultural comparisons are especially valuable. Master students (M.A. in cognitive psychology and neuropsychology, second-year dissertations ) Research theses : 2010/2011 (in progress) Marie LAVAUX : Cultural effects on visual processing: stable and dynamic determinants. 2009/2010 Renzo BIANCHI : Effects of mood induction on global vs. local processing of visual information and eye movements. Professional theses: 2009/2010 S. JACQUES (currently neuropsychologist) S. ROSIER (currently psychologist) C. VIENNET (currently neuropsychologist) Master students (M.A. in cognitive psychology and neuropsychology, first-year dissertations ) 2010/2011 (current) Mélanie BÉCAUD : Stress-influences on categorization of line segments. Gladys CHAUTAIN : Visual pleasure: relationships between explicit and implicit measures. Aline CLAUDON : Eye movements in Alzheimer disease and depressive disorders. Pauline JEANNIN : Influences of linguistic categorization on visual processing. Aline WILLEMIN : Influences of mood on similarity judments and eye mmovements.. 2009/2010 Cindy BADET-DEMOLY : Relationships between global and local processing of compound stimuli and visual processing during Rorschach test. Marie LAVAUX : Cultural and emotional influences on global and local processings of visual information. Emilie MARCONOT : Thirst influences on the judgment of visual presentations of thirst-satisfying products. Nicolas NOIRET : Mood influences on eye movements during visual scene inspection. Mallory POECKER : Mood influences on eye movements during visual scene inspection. Etienne WAGNER : Stress influences on categorization of line segments 2008/2009 Athéna BALVERDE worked on the role of categorical learning in the change of visual discrimination abilities for complex stimuli. More specifically, she investigated the links between the amount of conceptual learning and the development of within-category compression (i.e., the acquired confusability of members pertaining to the same category). Renzo BIANCHI researched the role of dehydration on alliesthesia relative to visual stimulation processing ; he also investigated the role of affective concept priming on visual processing. Anaïs MORET investigated the links between expertise, emotions and judgment of recency (JOR) in adults. Sophie ROSIER investigated the links between expertise, emotions and judgment of recency (JOR) in adolescents in order to better understand how emotions modulates the cognitive 'weight' of information. Charline VIENNET dealt with judgment of recency (JOR) in individuals with congenital visual impairment. 2007/2008 Antoine IZING examined the links between categorical learning and perceptual judgment. He is now a professional in ergonomics.
